Event #22 of the 2010 World Series of Poker is the Ladies No-Limit Hold’em Championship. Ladies only events always stir up controversy as there are not any corresponding "male only" events. Theoretically, those of the male persuasion can enter this event and some do so. This year the most publicized testosterone fueled entry is Shaun Deeb. Some men look good in drag. Shaun is not one of them. Mr. Deeb allegedly lost a bet that required him to play the event. He did state that any winnings would go to charity, but many players viewed his entry with disdain.
Shaun Deeb is not the only sword-wielding crasher of this event, he is just the one everyone is talking about. The two sides of this debate are simple. One side calls it reverse discrimination to try to hold a gender exclusive event. The other side is trying to encourage more female poker participation by having a setting to play in that is not primarily a sausage-fest. Personally, I can see the merits in both sides of the argument, and will let others spew their vitriol for their stance on the issue.
Back to the game. Shaun Deeb busted out very short of the money. There were 1,054 (mostly female) entries into this $1,000 buyin event. The $948,600 prize pool will be divided among the top 117 players. The 117th player will cash for $1,802 while the winner will receive $192,132. After one day of this event 117 remain and the money bubble is burst. So being a womens event apparently did not mean conservative play as this is about the same pace as the other $1,000 events.
