Play with Confidence-Learn to Play Classic Poker

I’m sure that all of us have watched the WSOP and WPT events on television and come away with some new found appreciation for the game. You learn a lot and it makes you want to play like the Big Boys.

A few weeks ago I watched the movie, Maverick. No, not Tom Cruise in Top Gun but similiar. The movie is loosely center on the quest to play in the western version of the WSOP. The movie is based on an old TV series of the same name that starred James Garner, Roger Moore, Jack Kelly and Poker from time to time. These 3 actors were the original cool cats of TV; Mavericks' says it all. I found a few re-runs of the TV series on cable. Both the movie and the series are worth watching because they show old school Poker, or what Doyle Brunson calls Classic Poker. Daniel Negreanu plays and teaches something similar. He calls it little ball Poker. In both cases it is very different and a major contrast to the NLHE mentality of bluff, aggression and All-In calls at Every Flop, River or Turn.

Try it. If done right you will like it. It really makes you a more confident player. Even in online Poker being confident is important. It isn't easy. You have to practice it and constantly change up your game. Keep the rest of the table guessing. Finesse your way through the middle of a tournament. Look to maximize those good hands by betting 3 times instead of one big bet. Smooth call. Use the aggressiveness of another player against them instead of confronting and tilting with all in moves. There will still be a time and place for bluffs and aggression but it will be more believable because it isn’t the only move you have shown. Classic Poker is another way to enjoy the time you spend playing. Real confidence built on a solid foundation is what we appreciate about the Pros. You can only get it, help your game and your finishes if you learn to play Classic Poker.

I have read Daniels book. It is very interesting. It is a fun way to play because you are involved in alot of pots with a large range of hands.. If your post flop play in questionable or your hand reading skills poor then this is certainly not the style to play. Small Ball relys heavily on your post flop skills. I suggest dropping down in limits if you are going to try small ball. That way you can work on your post flop play and hand reading skills without it breaking the bank.

nail on the head

See that's not gonna happen really when you play freerolls or small buyins. people are just to crazy. But I fully agree. If you can keep three people in a pot and get 3/4 of there stack that's more than 1 persons full stack. You want to get the most chips you can from every player and really you should never risk all your chips before the river unless you have the absolute nuts or you are pyshic know what cards are coming and you know people are pot comitted and will call. don't know I am makig sense. Of course there are different situations can't play this way all the time.
