Seven Card Stud Champion donates all his winnings

Clipped from the Palo Alto Daily News

Earlier this month, Carl Spetzler, executive director of the Palo Alto educational nonprofit the Decision Education Foundation, invited board member Eric Brooks over to dinner.

"He said 'Sorry, I can't make it, I'm playing in a poker tournament. ... If I do well, you won't regret it,'" Spetzler said.

Indeed, after winning the 2008 World Championship of Poker's seven-card stud event, Brooks donated his entire $415,856 purse to the Decision Education Foundation, the nonprofit announced this week.

Brooks, co-founder of the Philadelphia-based global financial firm Susquehanna International Group, said in an e-mail Tuesday that he decided before the Las Vegas tournament to donate his winnings to the foundation, which works with youth groups, develops classroom materials and trains educators to teach students how to make intelligent life choices.

I am sure he is proud of the bracelet, but from the sound of "Brooks, co-founder of the Philadelphia-based global financial firm Susquehanna International Group" he probably doesn't "need" the money, and the charity thing may even be prudent financially....

I would imagine giving away that much money to charity has some nice tax advantages to a large business owner.

I need a charity, the Fonzi WSOP Charity. Any donors? lol
