A Law Professor Looks at Online Poker?s Black Friday

In a previous blog, I wrote that the timing was suspicious.* Why did the federal Department of Justice (“DoJ”) make its big show on Friday, April 15, 2011, when the grand jury had been meeting for more than a year? We might not know the reasons for the timing.* But we can understand why the [...]

Thanks for posting this Fonzi! Nice read and just tells me that things will continue to drag out. I guess that DOJ needs to work on getting someone in custody and I get the impression that they really don't have a great case to prosecute.

Burt, I listened to him in a webinar podcast earlier today and he seems to think they will eventually try to get them to a plea deal without ever going to court since they can't force them to come to the US.

This will either get dragged out for years or settled very quickly.

I agree Fonzi! I see a plea deal more likely, since they will have a difficult time getting an extradition. Overall situation is a mess and I can only hope that things are settled soon.

the only problem I can see with a deal coming up is the fact that they will get away with it, sure it will probably get expensive and might show others in this business to be more careful ... but is it really a step towards the legalization of online poker in the US?

We can only hope that is the outcome, but I still see this as years down the road. I don't see any federal legislation happening any time soon. Our representative will most likely wait on individual States to legalize and regulate their own on-line poker. This is already happening, but it will not happen fast enough. I see this as years away, as States attempt to increase their revenue options in today's cash strapped economy.

It is another step in removing the freedoms and rights of the citizens of the USA and another step past being a national security state and towards being a police state.
