The Borgata Poker Open would have seemed doomed before it started. Not only were all WPT events drawing much smaller fields everywhere, but the World Series of Poker Europe was going on at the same time as the WPT Borgata Poker Open. All the signs pointed to yet another tiny turnout for the once venerable tour. But the Borgata had other plans.
The Borgata decided that changing times called for changeable tournaments. Gone was the huge $10,000 buyin. This Borgata Poker Open would have a $3,500 buyin. Taking a page from the online world, the prize pool was a guaranteed $2,000,000. Sounds like a risky proposition given the smaller WPT fields of this year?
Well over 1,000 players registered to play. That is approaching double the guaranteed prize pool. When was the last time a WPT event attracted 1,000 runners? So Kudos to the Borgata on transforming the WPT from a wounded, dying beast left over from a previous time into a vibrant entity teaming with life.
