when strategy messes with your game

Hey,

I've been playing online poker (play money) and freerolls with some success (finishing in the money.. albeit it pennies). I've taken alot of flack from regular players about making moves that are poor strategy. betting out of position, raising on the turn, etc.

So I went and read a bunch of books, looked into "proper holdem etiquette, and traditional strategy (tight aggressive, etc.)... The long and short of it is My game totally sucks now!

I haven't won a tourney in a week, I haven't got in the top three of a sit and go for twice that!

How do i get "my" game back?

Try to take a few days off. Not playing for a few days can clear your head, and give you a fresh start

Man, I hate when that happens! LOL Reading and learning can really mess up your game until you pick and choose what works best for you. After I study, I always stick to freerolls until I try out my new stuff to see if -1. I understand what I'm supposed to be doing and 2. If it works for me. You'll get your game back-you probably already have by now. good luck

I read a lot on forums and it sometimes messes with my game. I'll try something new that I've read and totally screw it up. My advice is to add new wrinkles to your game slowly. If you were having good success, then maybe your natural style is your best game. Who cares what other people think. I love it when I get called a donkey, it means I put someone on tilt and they're more willing to try to pry it back while making mistakes.

Regarding tight aggressive, I have read something about tight aggressive bots and wondered at that moment but I was not familiar with a lot of terminology but learning process is really amazing thing. Many books and online stuff makes a tight bond between the game and the player. Who knows how to play poker, they really enjoys it.

wow nice topic!!!
I tell ya I thought that for a bit, then read about every pokerbook you can download for free on a "bit torrent", and had just about the same results you had during freeroll play, and never really did go back to the way I did play..I think the best thing that help me was in big field freerolls was to take a gamble!!! and when I have a strong hand ,not be afraid to put my tourney on the line.now I don't agree with this kinda play, I preffer postflop play, more that preflop play, but their are times for it! and being lucky is about the only thing that can beat skill at times....

We all would like to have the biggest stack the first hour and thats the way I'd play win/lose BACK THEN (lol) THEN AFTER trying to improve my game, so I could get away from the everyday freerolls.. I do still play the better ones tho, and I believe PokerTime is having their $7,000. tomorrow, thursday Apr.17th....and I will play them on bad runs also,If I can see it being a bad run..

But I don't play like I use too, Its seems if I can just hold off intill the blinds are bigger, at times, I'll have a good game!!!,(SOMETIMES)...... chips are a big factor about reaching the pay and unless we make-em we aint going to have to worry about IT..at some point of time we are going to have to take a gamble..Im just not lucky enough to get that many games that are give -me's . and we have to be carefull and lucky at time for it to work out!!.

A good player that don't play much anymore told me: "To win a tourney, you must first make the money" and that made a lot of sence to me...EVEN IN FREEROLLS AND FUNCHIPS
