Poker staking?

I've recently started doing rather well. Turning 6.50 from a freeroll to 157.55 (over a course of a week, I've had nothing better to do).

My husband recently told me how he used to be staked as a player, and that I should try it out.

Does anyone have any information on this?

I'm fairly new, so I have doubts that anyone would actually want to stake someone like me.

Also, is there actually any benefit in it?

If you really have an edge in the game, why give it away by letting someone stake you?

You can use a stake as a kickstart to play cashgames above your level, but for the occasional tournament is isnt a smart thing to do.

I think it's more a matter of wanting to learn, as my husband mentioned that he was tutored along the way.
I've only been playing online for about a month or so, and I know that I could learn a lot more, as most of my wins are by great luck, or a lot of donks and just happening to wait it out until I'm in the money.

But I really want to start playing heads up, and I'm thinking that the bankroll I currently have, and the experience with HU that I have, I don't have enough to really get into it and play well.

I just don't get how staking works, to tell the truth.

And as a general rule, I stay away from cashgames all together. Too much swing for me.

i would also agree with dunbar , why give it away in hope that someone else would make money for you ? take your chances and take it slow and carefull . you have done well so far , keep it going with that best of luck . gl on and off the felts .

Here's my thoughts on staking....I have been staked and I have staked players...

I find when I am staked I am uptight and overly cautious to the point of being passive... Thats because I am the kind of person that really doesn't feel comfortable taking chances with someone else's money.... I can play my "A" game..I try to scrap into the money instead of win the tourney...

Also...It sounds like you are bankroll building at a pretty nice pace...Why share the fruit of your labors...There are plenty of ways to learn to be a better player that cost less then 40%-60% of your winnings..many good books to read..sites to post on and there are several excellent video training sites that will help you fill holes in you game..for a fee you can have pros analyze a tourney hand history..invaluable tools

If you want to take a shot at a tourney too costly for you and you have a chance to get staked and you are sure you will feel comfortable taking risks with someone elses money then go for it and take a shot.. To get staked at buy in levels that you can afford makes no sense to me. pay you own buyin and reap the rewards...

Just my 2 cents worth.

There's plenty of reasons.
Many of todays online pro's are beeing backed, which is really understandable. The swings can be huge at the higher stakes and it feels alot safer playing when it's not your own money on the line.

Letting someone stake you is a good chance for you to test the waters at a higher limit which you normally can't afford. If you used your own money to play at these higher levels you would still suffer from variance (no matter how big your edge is), and result in you going busto because your bankroll cant handle the swings.

It helps other who dont have a bankroll on sites to get a chance at starting one , and trying games they may not normally play..

macaroni and all,

hey, macaroni, you are really doing well.
got a kick out of this line of yours.....

"most of my wins are by great luck,
or a lot of donks and
just happening to wait it out until I'm in the money."

and this after a little over a month of playing....
took me years to learn this lesson.

some great advice here in these posts.
keep up the good work.
macaroni, do you have a blog here at hpc so we can
see how your doing?

i think that staking is a good idea for the more major poker players, i dont mean your not however, you have to realise that a lot of people do expect something back.

i would like to be staked for the WSOP :) dont think it will happen tho

but i understand also what people are saying if you only play occasionally then you need to take it easy and build up your knowledge of poker thru regular players

then you wont need to be staked you can stake yourself, i know many people offer
poker training out there but im sure if you google what you want, also full tilt has a great poker academy i would take a look,

i think staked games should be for those who will cash everytime like the pro's but best of luck
