Check cashing from poker sites

Ok well this is kind of a second part, from rickir's post but didn't wana flood her's with my nonsense. Anywayz....So i was cashing a check from a poker site at a bank i have been goin to for even before i had an account there. Well i was cashing it and the lady at the window said i would have to come in to cash it because there was a problem with the check. Well i guess the print on it was "suspicous?" prolly spelled that wrong, but roll with me. So i'm like um how so? And well they showed me and the people who sent the check put a stamp that said 2500 usd...Which apparently made them think it was a frod check. That never once accused me of being the one that done the check. But they said they felt they wouldn't be able to cash it. And asked me where i got it from...Which at a split second made me freeze because...well with all the gaming acts and all that, and with banks "cracking down" on the fund of net "gambling",would i some how get in trouble for doin so? I don't think so,but could the bank freeze my account? Like i wasn't sure. But i resorted to partiualy lieing. I said i got it from some one who i was told i could trust(which is mostly true). But i didn't come out and say who or what it was. Which brings me to this question, when ya'll cash the checks,when/if they ask you what it is from(which i am not sure they are sopose to do,but in my case i understood why they did)? Like should you tell them that you got it from a poker site? Btw,they did end up taking it,but said they could not give me the cash untill they find out if it's clear(that way i don't owe them the amount the check was in). Which was nice of them, they could have just gave me the cash then i would have had to pay it all back if it didn't clear. So good to see my bank has my best interests in mind. But yeah i was just curious on ya'll opinion. Sorry for such longs posts,i start tellin a short "post" then it ends up as a book.

Re: Check cashing from poker sites

i have cashed my last 2 at walmart tbh. and since checks are free on stars, and tilt, i only withdraw say 400 or so at a time so i can go to a place like walmart and cash them with no problem. i have been banking at the same place for 20 years, but i dont know that i would trust them to not question me on a poker site check.

Re: Check cashing from poker sites

yeah cashing a check at walmart was somethin i had talked to rickir about, just never really gotten to do it myself( i suck at poker lately lol). but i do believe at certain places, walmart(or other places some what like it) may charge you a couple dollars to do so. Which in reality is prolly more worth it than to go through all the hastle with the bank. Btw i dunno about the rest of ya'll,but when i won my WSOP package at pokertime...After a long list of issue(not with my bank) i eventualy got them to wire it to my bank account, which is another way of withdraw/deposit method.

Deposit it through an ATM. They don't ask questions. :P

Re: Check cashing from poker sites

next time tell them it's a refund from an online merchant.

Some poker site gave me that info, and I have to say its close enough to the truth that you aren't really lying and far enough away that the US government and their minions should leave you well enough alone.

As for the fraudulent cheque... must have been a new teller or something cuz thats sop at a lot of companies. I assume she was referring to the $2500 max stamp on the cheque.

Re: Check cashing from poker sites

If you would have deposited the check, there would not have been a problem. The drawback is that they place a 10 day hold on the funds to ensure the check clears. I've done it both ways. I deposited one and had no problem. The next one I cashed and got the money up front, then you may have seen my previous post where that AP third party check bounced and my bank took the funds from my account and assessed a $5.00 fee. I got AP to re-issue the check and refund the $5.00 fee. Once I got that check, I deposited it and everything was okay. I decided to keep these amounts at $500.00. My personal preference now is just to deposit them. :)

Re: Check cashing from poker sites

yeah that's pretty much what they did. They said they couldn't give me the cash right then, but would deposit it into my account as soon as it cleared(assuming that it would, and it did). And they told me the same thing, that it could take up to 10 days to clear. Which was killin me,because i had got it 2 days before my leaving to vegas, and really had no real cash to go with. But thankfully it cleared, got another check from AP,which got cash from right away. And also got the bankwire for WSOP package,So everything turned out peachy. Was just curious on what you guys thought.
