| 17/01/07 Ace King
I was in a freeroll last night, the first hand I was dealt was AK off. Usually I like to fold the first few hands in any freeroll and let the all-iners go at it. Having AK off though I decided to call the preflop raise. The flop comes down and I don't hit my cards. The raiser goes all-in, someone else calls and I fold. The person who called had Ace9 and the all in had pocket 7s. The caller with A9 hits his nine on the turn and takes the pockets out. Had I called I would have hit my King on the river and taken both players out. I play poker but, I don't like to gamble my tournament on a hope and a prayer first hand. What I don't get is the player with A9, why put a game on the line first hand with those cards. He had to know that the player who went all-in had a pocket pair. I know this was a freeroll and some players make loose calls. I'd like to have your thoughts on both freeroll and cash game plays. If you were me would you have called the all-in with AK off? If you had A9 would you have called the all-in? |

I would not have called with A9. As for AK, if I was in the mood to play poker I would have folded. However, since it was a freeroll if I already had a multitude of more important games going, or if I was tired, bored or in the mood to have fun, I would have called. But, if I were playing poker? No that AK is a fold there. I don't like getting involved in races behind until either my stack/blinds force me to, or until I am in the money. |

| I truly hate folding AK, but as you said, I want to PLAY poker. Which is hard to do if you get sucked out on the first hand. So weighing how to achieve longevity in a game along with hand selection is my choice. Any two cards all-in, when u haven't hit the flop is a gamble. Becky, your a solid player keep up the good play girl!! |

Forget the ace king, which in a freeroll or cash game, is a hand I will play for a 4x raise preflop, and depending on the flop, another substantial raise, if I hit. The players in this example were, with the obvious exception of my beautiful wife, who, is by far the better poker player in this duo, were both donks. First hand, all in on the flop with a small pair, and then the call with ace 9 with no pair, is the epitome of donkdom. Freerolls, it seems brings out the best in us all. Kudos to beck for the fold. In that position, I would have done the same as I usually lke to go deep in tourneys, or else why am I playing? Forrest and I were at a table in the SP freeroll last night with 25 left. Marc, yes I said Marc, late in a FREEROLL, I know.... he commented he decided to play serious in this freeroll hehe. Any old who, Marc raises 7 or 8 times the blind on the button, BB calls. Flop comes no higher than a ten, Marc pushes all in and after much deliberation, BB calls. Marc shows Ace jack, BB called with Ace queen after completely missing the flop. Now each player had 13 k and change and the blinds were 300 600, BB had maybe 1000 more than Marc, yet he calls that particular bet with ace high. What would the reasoning be behind that particular call? The Preflop raise was clearly portraying a pocket pair, and the continuation bet was showing a higher pocket pair. Forget the actual cards and the fact that Marc was bluffing, how does one come to the decision, based on the preflop raise and flop all in, to call with two cards to come with a strong ace. It never ceases to amaze me that players will call any bets with strong aces, whether they hit or not. |

Stumilty and Beckyt, you guys are amazing. Beckyt, I cant tell you how many times I folded Ace King after the flop cause I didn't hit. Good job there. Ace 9 the same. If you don't hit on the flop only if its a modest raise or a check do you continue on. My opinion and take it at face value since I don't and can't play too many FR's is take a look at the words freeroll seperately. #1 FREE, it's free. #2 Roll, let it roll cause it's free. Too mnay players take these words at their vale FREE and ROLL. They don't understand that they're free to help you increase your poker playing skills and possibly make some $$ while your doing that. You ever wonder why our B&M section is loaded with FR bytches. LOL. People need to learn how to play the game and not base their success on the lottery. Eric |
