AI Bots in poker? Is there Cheating online?

Hey all,

This is the University of Alberta site, a very fine University studying what? POKER! They are trying to make the perfect AI that can beat humans and play even better that humans.

http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/~games/poker/

You know what this means for us, internet poker players? We're gonna get creamed by super computers! lol. No, not really... but apparently, Phil "The Unabomber" Laak actually won a match against the machine. But it is only time until the programmers develop a super infallible machine. I wish I can go back to school and work on it. *sigh*

Some of the new idea on how to play poker comes from John Nash (idea was discussed in the movie "A beautiful mind"). They do not maximize the winnings, but minimize the loss, a very good idea.

Thank god though that poker sites are working to check on people that are usuing that kind of software. (well I hope they do!) If they don't we have a serious problem. Does anyone know more about this topic?

Bots will always be a fear/concern amongst online players. One would be more legitimately concerned, however, with colluding bots... ones that talk to one another, while sitting at the same table.

Ed Miller, on his poker blog, discussed this in the beginning of December.

Hold'em poker is a game of incomplete information. A computer can't just win because it can't play perfectly because it doesn't have all the information. While these computers probably can turn a profit they won't rule the game.

ya, i agree. I feel that poker requires human intelligence to make certain decisions.

programs are essentially mathematical, If you programmed a machine to play "perfect" poker it would be very easy to beat with basic knowledge of the math of poker. computers are very bad at the "implied" areas of poker and that is why none of the WSOP video games have a challenging A.I.

Why the river? Couldn't it lose on the flop due to bad luck? Or at any time at all during the game? I don't understand the mythical importance of the river.
